What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure designed to remove infected tissue and eliminate tooth pain. Inside each tooth is a cluster of soft tissue known as the pulp, comprised of tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. A root canal treatment is needed when the pulp has become infected or damaged through extensive decay or trauma to the tooth.

The treatment eliminates the infected tissue and leaves the outer tooth structure intact, thus allowing you to regain its function and avoid the need for tooth replacement. We recommend root canal treatment to save your natural tooth, especially if enough intact tooth structure remains and the bone around the tooth is not compromised.

Signs You Need Root Canal Therapy

Not every instance of tooth pain or swelling indicates the need for a root canal procedure. The most effective way for us to determine if root canal treatment is necessary is for you to come in for a comprehensive examination and x-rays. Here are some warning signs to look out for:

  • Unresolved, persistent pain
  • Sharp pain when chewing
  • Lingering temperature sensitivity
  • Chipped, fractured, or cracked tooth
  • Discomfort when biting or chewing
  • Darkened, discolored tooth
  • Bad taste in the mouth that won’t go away
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Swelling around the face
  • Tooth mobility

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s best to contact us to schedule an appointment so we can start any necessary treatment right away. The sooner you receive treatment, the more likely it is that we can preserve the tooth and alleviate your pain. It will also keep the infection from spreading to neighboring teeth, gums, and even other areas of the body.

Our Step-By-Step Root Canal Process

At Capital City Dentistry, we often administer root canal therapy in two visits. Our dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and jaw using x-rays to identify the extent of damage and determine the shape of the compromised root canal.

The procedure involves the following steps:

Anesthesia: To start, we administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth. Then, we place a small rubber dam over the treatment area to separate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva during the treatment.

Inner tooth access: An opening is created in the enamel to provide access and allow the infection to be treated.

Pulp removal: To restore the health of the tooth, the infected tissue is removed from the pulp chamber and the root canal.

Cleaning and disinfecting: The root canal and pulp chamber are cleaned and disinfected to kill any remaining infection in the pulp chamber or root canal.

Sealing the canals: Once the area is cleaned, our dentist fills the canals and interior of the tooth with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This will seal the tooth and prevent bacteria from accessing or causing reinfection in the canal.

Temporary crown: We will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth and restore your bite as the area heals while we create a custom-made permanent crown for you.

Placement of the final restoration: In about two weeks, you’ll come back in to have your permanent crown fitted and bonded. The crown will provide extra protection against future damage and give your tooth restored functionality.
